The Power of Chōwa is a book about the Japanese philosophy
of finding balance even when things seem to go wrong.
Author Akemi Tanaka wanted to create a cover that visualises this in a way that’s quintessentially Japanese and embraces traditional simplicity while still feeling modern.

A limited edition of The Power of Chōwa designed to do
exactly what it teaches, with a special cover that keeps the book
in a constant state of balance. This is  done through a simple cut
in one of the book’s corners, reflecting the Japanese style of
achieving balance through natural simplicity and imperfection*.

This was created in collaboration with Robin Gordon, Ella Monti and Akemi Tanaka and was awarded a wooden pencil by D&AD 21.
